about

Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun and is named after the Roman god of the sea. Neptune is also considered an ice giant similar in composition to Uranus. Neptune's atmosphere is composed primarily of hydrogen and helium, along with traces of hydrocarbons and possibly nitrogen, and contains a higher proportion of ices such as water, ammonia, and methane. Traces of methane in the outermost regions of the outer atmosphere account for the planet's stunning blue appearance.

The atmosphere of Neptune is notable for its active and visible weather patterns. At the time of the Voyager II flyby, a Great Dark Spot was visible in the southern hemisphere comparable to the Great Red Spot on Jupiter. These weather patterns are driven by the strongest sustained winds of any planet in the solar system, with speeds as high as 1300 mph. Neptune has a faint and fragmented ring system that was confirmed by Voyager II.
